Today we return to the story of Abram and Sarai. Roughly twenty years have passed and Sarai (now Sarah) has given birth to Isaac. When God commands Abram (now Abraham) to sacrifice his promised son, Abraham responds in faith and a miracle occurs. The same man who once laughed at God (Gen. 17:17) now obeys without question. We will evaluate Abraham’s transformation and explore how God uses trials and testing to build our testimony.

And my God will supply all your needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:19

Nine of the names of God I’ve chosen to feature in this study include a combination of Jehovah and another Hebrew word.

These powerful combinations illuminate many different aspects of God’s character.

Jehovah Jireh (Jĕ·hō·vah Jīʹ·rĕh) means "the Self-Existent One sees all, knows all, and provides for all."

Abraham was the first biblical character to use this name for God; he uttered it in holy wonder after God provided the ram as an alternate sacrifice for his son Isaac.

As we study the names of God in Scripture, it is important to remember the law of first mention.

Kay Arthur explains this principle in her book, Lord I Want to Know You:

"When a significant word is mentioned for the first time in the Bible, the principles connected with that word hold true throughout Scripture."

Day 3: God Rescues Abraham from Unbelief
Today’s Scripture Reading: Genesis 22:6-14 ESV {Read Online}
God promised to build Abraham and Sarah into a mighty nation (Gen. 17:5,16).

Yet, Abraham and Sarah found it difficult to believe God capable of fulfilling His promise to them.

Can we really condemn them for their unbelief?

Until we have firsthand experience of God’s supernatural provision, our human minds struggle to see Him as Jehovah Jireh.

Even so, God fulfilled His promise to Abraham and Sarah.

Genesis 21:1-2 says, "The Lord visited Sarah as he had said, and the Lord did to Sarah as he had promised. And Sarah conceived and bore Abraham a son in his old age at the time of which God had spoken to him."

God rescued Abraham from his unbelief by doing exactly what He said He would do.

After proving Himself trustworthy, God tested Abraham’s faith.

The purpose of this test was not to expose Abraham’s weakness, but rather to demonstrate how Abraham had matured.

God’s faithfulness fuels our obedience to His commands.

When Abraham was commanded to sacrifice his beloved son, he responded in humble and immediate obedience.

Experiential knowledge of God’s supernatural provision gives us courage to obey when the orders make no human sense. {Click to Tweet}

When it seemed that God was taking back the blessing and removing the promise, He was actually creating an opportunity to prove Himself trustworthy, yet again.

Our Response to Abraham's Story

God understands our struggle with unbelief and lovingly provides belief-building circumstances in our lives.

Unfortunately, these circumstances often require us to trust Jehovah Jireh with our most treasured possessions and our long-awaited provision.

Not an easy assignment! But so worth it.

In the story of the ram in the thicket, fear of God plus faith in God preceded a miracle from God.

Do you need a miracle today?

Follow Abraham’s example of faith, obedience, and trust.

Belief in God allows us to obey when we don’t understand, have faith when we can’t see what He is doing, and experience the blessing of His provision when there is no earthly way.

3 Psalms to Pray when You Don’t Know What to Say

For years, I felt that every time I would try to pray, I’d get stuck. Then I’d feel bad about myself, certain everyone else was doing it better than me.This pattern continued until a friend shared a few of her favorite verses to pray when she was "stuck in spiritual mud." This was an altogether new approach to prayer for me, and I cannot tell you how helpful it has been. {Read the Article}
